The Microphones' album The Glow Pt. 2 is inextricably linked now with pulling on long underwear on cold mornings, riding my bike down St-Urbain and low sun through red leaves. That's what I'm listening to right now.
This summer's jams are Human Highway, Nina Simone and Sean Kingston. Building memories. Smells, visions and feelings to recall next year.
Boys feel more important than ever but all of this month's dates have been old, boring or crazy. I just want a besweatered fella who can stay up all night running around with me and will maybe still be there in the morning to smell a long-stemmed rose or two.

I feel like a 'brain-melt' sandwich might actually be pretty alright. I could eat brain if it had cheese on it. Maybe some tomato. Lettuce. Not human brain, though. Maybe dolphin brain.
My mom told me that Koreans sometimes eat live baby octopus. I think that might be alright. Like a more fun version of calamari. All tickly and hugging your tongue for a moment or so and then... it's just really fresh sashimi. |

In the past year it seems a lot of my favourite actors have revealed themselves as talented musicians and songwriters too. First Zooey Deschanel goes and blows everyone away with She & Him. Then Ryan "Cutest Guy in Hollywood" Gosling releases a couple of singles for his project Dead Man's Bones, which everyone is comparing to the Arcade Fire but I think this band is doing more interesting stuff than the Arcade Fire have in a long time. This band just reminds me of those magical summertime shows that have everyone singing and shouting along by the end of the set.
You've probably already seen this, but in case not:
Oh, and here he is guest starring as a British orphan on Road to Avonlea, THE BEST SHOW OF ALL TIME. What an accurate accent!

So I have one paper to finish for tomorrow and two for Thursday. Then three more the week after. Only one the week after that. Then finals - only four of those. In the meantime, I am trying to sublet my place, sell my bike, get organized/pack all my shit to go back to Vancouver and storage (the day after my last final), find a job in Vancouver and generally not combust. Oh, and somehow I need to find people who will move my furniture to storage while I am across the country. Then, while still across the country, I need to find a place to live next year. Fuck my life.
My diet is mostly coffee, ephedrine, whiskey and pie.
New mantra: If i can make it to May, I should be OK. |

My sister was in town all of last week. I forget how much I love my family when they're not around. It probably shouldn't work like that but that kid is so awesome. If you didn't know by now, this is going to be a post about how cool my sister is. She likes poutine almost as much as me, managed to get her English teacher into Joanna Newsom, only ever wears patterned clothing (which is amazingly hard to pull off for anyone else); her favourite movie is the same as my favourite move (the Breakfast Club) and she has the best jokes of anyone I know. Oh, I could go on and on but should probably do some of the homework I neglected during her visit.

ps - You know how twins have special ESP? umm my sister and I do too. One time I was trying to think of an actresses name so I said, "You know that actress?" and she said "Reese Witherspoon?" and she was right! This is only one of many instances of us being psychic sisters. |

If you are a Canadian woman, who finds herself interested in literature, these two are it. I don't have a lot of love for Atwood but damn,do I have a lot of respect. No one - man or woman - in Canadian literature has managed to be this prolific. And Alice Munro, God, she's Alice Munro! I don't know if there is anything more beautiful than an Alice Munro story.

Later, after some Zs are caught, it will be impossible to remember the film separating me from reality. I won't remember the disconnect between my brain and my sluggish fingers. I will not remember going back over almost every word to correct lazy typos, that are impossible to avoid right now.
Message to future Shaena: yes, coffee is magic. Yes, redbull, rockstar and all that other scary cough-syrupy shit is double-magic but you still become an idiot after about 36 hours of consciousness - no matter what weird drinks you chug. Also, though make-up is magic too, you still look like someone hit you in the face with a sleepy stick. Remember this. Stop staying up all nights. Don't be such a stupid fucking idiot. You are not 18 anymore. |
